May fit when
- Needs licensed nursing oversight
- Needs post-hospital rehab or medical monitoring
- Needs wound care, injections, therapy, or higher support
May not be enough when
- Mostly independent lifestyle needs
- Only wants social housing
- Urgent emergency symptoms that require hospital care
Questions families should ask
- Is this short-term rehab or long-term nursing care?
- Does Medicare coverage apply?
- What therapy is available?
- What is the discharge plan?
- How are medical changes escalated?
Coverage and payment questions
- Medicare may cover qualifying short-term skilled nursing after a hospital stay if strict rules are met. Long-term custodial care is usually not covered by Medicare.
- Ask whether Medicaid waiver, VA benefits, long-term care insurance, private-pay contracts, or Medicare-covered medical services are relevant.
- Request written fee schedules, care-level rules, and discharge or transfer policies.
